What to expect:
- A sports massage session typically lasts one hour and is completed in the horse's stall.
- The massage sequence strokes are as follows for each muscle group: opening, locating, treating and closing.
- Horses should be walked for 5 minutes post massage.
- It is recommended to not have a strenuous workout 24 hours prior to a massage.
- Horses can be ridden as soon as 1 hour post massage but it is recommended for the ride to encourage stretching.
- It is common for horses to lick and chew throughout the massage. This shows acceptance and a relaxed state.
- A difference is often seen with only two massages but it is recommended to to allow for 3 consecutive massages.
- The average horse would benefit by receiving a sports massage treatment routine every other week.
- A horse in strenuous training and competition may benefit most by receiving weekly sports massage sessions.
